Approach - Technology
NIP's web-based applications are built using industry-standard, open source database and web technology software, functioning on a variety of server platforms and databases (MS SQL Server, Oracle and all operating systems).
Our solutions are closely aligned with corporate IT standards and policies and, where they are installed at customer sites - rather than hosted at NIP - IT staff there should not require any additional skills transfer or training.
Either way, as no additional or proprietary software is required on client PCs, it is quick and easy to provide access to individual users, mobile workers, and departments - across international boundaries. This further removes the burden of system maintenance and support.
A core set of flexible, configurable tools serves as our development environment, written in e.g. Python, PHP. These tools enable us to rapidly and effectively build industry- and customer-specific solutions using the following key components and principles:
- Forms, views, questionnaires
- Processes, rules, workflow, access rights, etc
- Rapidly configurable, before and after deployment
- Balancing flexibility and standardisation
- Import and export of standard file formats - Excel, XML, text - e.g. for reporting or integration with other systems/data
- Easy to incorporate bespoke work alongside the core system
Open source software is rapidly becoming mainstream, having initially been the preserve or IT specialists. Software giants such as Microsoft, and hardware vendors such as HP and Dell are reflecting this trend, recognising that open source software presents many advantages over the more traditional, proprietary approach:
- Reduced licencing and system overheads
- No "lock-in" to proprietary software or vendor
- Easy system migration/upgrade path
- Wide availability of development resource
- A worldwide community of users and developers sharing knowledge and experience
